Cape Cod and Massachusetts

October 13 - 20, 2018

There's really not much to say by way of introductory material. For Terry's birthday this year, we wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before. So we went to Cape Cod. That's it.

As always, you'll see this symbol scattered throughout: (w) . Those symbols are links to Wikipedia articles giving more in depth information about places we went and things we saw, for those who are interested.

Saturday, October 13

The flight was mostly uneventful. We had a brief layover in St. Louis, and after we got on the plane and got settled, there came an announcement that the plane had an oil leak and couldn't fly. Fortunately, they had another plane ready to go, so we were only delayed about an hour and a half.

So we got to Boston and picked up our rental car, and proceeded to have our first adventure. It had been a long flight, and Southwest doesn't serve meals. So we wanted to get some dinner. But it was getting late, and we still had a long drive to our resort. So we consulted Google Maps, and found a Wendy's not far away. But on the drive, we hit a problem.

In Boston, they have something they call the Big Dig (w). This is a section of freeway that used to be above ground, but was moved underground. So as I was heading for Wendy's, I found myself driving through a long tunnel. No problem, except that while I was underground, my phone lost its GPS signal. I suddenly noticed that the dot on the map that shows my location wasn't moving, and I had no idea how far out of my way I was going. So I exited the tunnel at the first opportunity, and after a few more wrong turns, finally found Wendy's.

After we ate, we hit the road for Cape Cod. On the way, we stopped at a convenience store for snacks, and I was delighted to find Drake's Cakes (w), a brand of snack cakes that I used to enjoy when I was growing up in New Jersey, but you can't find anywhere in California.

We arrived late at the resort, the Harwichport Resort Club:

...and proceeded to have our next adventure. I had previously made arrangements with the resort manager for our late arrival. He was supposed to leave a key for me in the mailbox by the office door. But the key wasn't there. So despite the lateness of the hour, I had to call the manager, who fortunately was still awake. He gave me the code to the lockbox where the master key was stored, and we were able to get into our room:

Note the interesting architectural detail in the back of the room. Here's a closeup view:

Yes, folks, we had to climb a steep spiral staircase to get to the bedroom. It was rather nerve wracking at first - and it was a challenge to get our suitcases up there - but we got used to it. Trooper, on the other hand, would have none of it. He dug in his heels - or paws - and absolutely refused to go up the stairs.

The resort has a large back yard, with some barbecues and picnic tables:

...and a swimming pool:

...but of course, they were out of service at this time of year:

There was a short drive leading from the back of the parking lot out to the street behind the resort. This drive had no street sign, but Google Maps identified it as Knockturn Alley! I looked around for Diagon Alley, but couldn't find it. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, ask a Harry Potter fan.)

Courtesy of Google Maps, here's a map showing the location of the resort:
